It is a joy for me to be back after a bit of a break with another family photo session post — just as it was a joy for me to get to photograph this lovely family a few weeks ago. We met at a vast and glorious park in north/central New Jersey. This state, you may be surprised to learn, is home to many really incredible, expansive parks, which make awesome backdrops for photo sessions and give the little ones tons of room to run (often a much-needed component in family photo shoots). As anyone who has ever pointed a camera at a toddler knows, it can be a bit of a challenge to get them stay still long enough to get a good shot, let alone to smile on cue. Trying to get the littlest member of this family to do those very things made for lots of fun and laughs that day. Big Sis, Mom, and Dad all got giggles out of her — and out of me at the same time. It is obvious, even just being around them for a little while, that these four share a great deal of love and a sweet, happy, joy-filled life together. I am grateful to have been invited to capture some of that, and hope they enjoy their photos for years to come.
It’s been a few months since I’ve had the opportunity to hold a family photo session. In spite of my starts and stops, I just love it, and I am always so grateful to get behind the camera whenever I get the chance. What a joy it was to get back to it with these guys – a lovely, fun couple and their adorable, two-year-old, little trooper. Though you might not be able to tell from the photos, it was quite a chilly, blustery day when we went out for our shoot. The little star of the show would much rather have been cozy at home after his long day, I am sure. He hung in there, though, and gave us plenty of awesome smiles – especially when Mom and Dad made him giggle and when he spotted an airplane flying high up in the sky. But the fun really began when his two cousins arrived to share the spotlight with him for a little bit. Cold and wind aside, it was a fun time in the park. Here are a few highlights:
It brings me such joy to finally be back behind the camera doing what I love, and working with this beautiful crew for my first shoot after a few months away was extra-special for me. I have known Momma my whole life. Literally. We “met” in high school and became friends. Then one day, when our Moms found out we were friends, we learned that we are actually distant cousins through marriage, and that we had met way before high school – when we were babies playing in the same crib or playpen or something. As life goes sometimes, young adulthood took us separate ways again, but several years ago, the good side of social media brought us back in touch, and we’ve been reconnected ever since. When it was time for hubbie, doggie, and I to move, it was my friend/cousin who helped us find the place we now call home. To see her so happy with her wonderful husband, her sweet, silly, adorable, delightful, little boy, and her first child (the four-legged one) makes me smile. And, to have been able to capture just a few glimpses of that happiness means the world to me. Thanks, guys, for getting up at the crack of dawn and braving the chilly fall morning shoot, and for getting me back out there again. You guys are the best!!!
What a blessing it was for me to have been given the opportunity to photograph this dear girl enjoying a little backyard pool time with her Nana not too long ago. A child with special needs and without abilities that many of us take for granted, she certainly has many incredible attributes all her own — including the ability to give and receive a whole lot of love! Though she may not speak with words, she finds many other ways to communicate. That giant smile of hers, for example, well, that just speaks volumes. It was my honor to capture a few moments of this sweet, beautiful child having a little fun in the sun.
